In 2013, Variety reported that Ubisoft was developing a Watch Dogs film, along with Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Raving Rabbids films. The project was announced on August 20, 2013 at the Sony Gamescom 2013 conference. Ubisoft would have worked with Columbia Pictures and New Regency to make the film, Sony would have distributed the film in the US, and 20th Century Fox would have handled the international distribution rights. It was announced on April 24, 2014 that Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese would write the film. However, the movie has been in development hell for years, and was assumed to be scrapped, until Engadget published an article in 2016 stating that the film is still in development and that Ubisoft plans to make film renditions for all of its franchises. As of 2018, the film's fate is unknown.
